Health sciences and technologies have been identified as a priority sector by Luxembourg’s Government. The further development of the sector is being supported by an ambitious national action plan, which aims to develop the country as a centre of excellence in molecular diagnostics, the main pillar of personalised medicine.
Personalised medicine is based on the exploitation, through medical care, of the knowledge on a genetic basis of health and disease brought on by the sequencing of the human genome. This innovative medical approach aims to provide any individual with the right diagnosis and treatment at the right time and at the right cost.
Boosting excellence – Strategic Partnership Initiative
A Strategic Partnership Initiative was launched in 2008 between the Luxembourg Institute of Health, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, the University of Luxembourg and three world-renowned US Institutions:
Through these partnerships, Luxembourg has been able to develop a well-renowned high-quality biobanking facility, the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL), a truly multidisciplinary centre in systems biomedicine, the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) and an international biomarker discovery programme, the lung cancer biomarker discovery project. Following Luxembourg’s long tradition of international collaboration in various fields, the aim has been to build on existing competences from our partners to boost the development of Luxembourg as a centre of excellence in the area of molecular medicine.
Catalysing partnerships - Personalised Medicine Consortium
Public stakeholders involved in the Strategic Partnership Initiative are now formally associated within a Personalised Medicine Consortium (PMC) that focuses on four main priorities:
- cancer (lung, breast and colon)
- Parkinson’s disease
- type II diabetes
- a normal population cohort
Luxembourg BioHealth Cluster
The Luxembourg BioHealth Cluster is a key initiative to strengthen the sector. The Cluster supports the sector in various ways, promotes its interests and skills and facilitates networking and the establishment of new partnerships for collaboration.
