National Funding for Public Research Organisations

The National Research Fund (FNR) is the primary financial source for supporting public research projects and researchers in Luxembourg.

Dedicated to strengthening the excellence and competitiveness of Luxembourg Public Research Organisations, the FNR has put in place several research programmes:

  • CORE, designed to support several thematic research priorities
  • OPEN, which intends to provide funding for projects that do not fit into areas covered by the thematic CORE programme
  • INTER, which aims to promote international cooperation in the field of research
  • ATTRACT, where the objective is to attract young and promising researchers to Luxembourg
  • PEARL, designated for attracting experienced and internationally renowned researchers to Luxembourg

Along with these research programmes, the FNR manages several aid schemes:

  • AFR Grant Scheme, ("Aides à la formation recherche") is a grant scheme supporting researchers in their doctoral and postdoctoral training
  • Financial support for research communication which extends financial support to scientific conferences, exploratory workshops, lecture series, summer schools and scientific monographs
  • Financial support for promoting science to the public which supports projects that raise public awareness of scientific topics or that publicise research being carried out in Luxembourg
  • INTER mobility programme which allows for research secondments in both directions
  • ERC Grant Support, which supports and encourages Luxembourg’s participation in calls for project proposals launched by the European Research Council (ERC).
